• Binary decoder in adsb_hub3 version 3.9 has been upgraded with logic for parsing of the Mode S Enhanced Surveillance (EHS) messages. Those include selected vertical intention message, track and turn report and last but not least heading and speed report. More technical description of the EHS messages is available here. Binary decoder is working with rtl_tcp, beast_tcp and sbs_tcp inputs. You can see new data with bonjour, realtime and rest outputs. Since number of EHS messages heavily depends on ground base radars activity your results may vary. Later this month RealADSB iOS and macOS apps will be updated to show EHS information.

• RealADSB app for iPhone, iPad and macOS is finally upgraded to version 2.0! In this release we introduce an integration with OpenSky website which provides free access to a network of ADS-B feeders via OpenSky API There are also some UI changes such as new app icon, ground vehicles and so on. • Last few months I've spent programming RealADSB client for MSX computers. 8 bit computers are not famous for speed or high resolution graphics but they hold huge sentimental value for grown up kids who used them back in 198x. For this project I've bought Japanese Sony MSX2 computer with GR8NET cartridge that provides network capabilities to a compatible MSX computers. RealADSB client for MSX is connected to adsb_hub3 server running on Raspberry Pi in local network via Ethernet cable and Wi-Fi router. There are two version: Basic and C for MSX-DOS. • After a few minor updates we are releasing new and significantly refreshed adsb_hub3 3.7 which will help RealADSB iOS app to show up-2-date information about vertical profile of track for selected aircraft. It's not a mandatory update and not related to security issues discovered in log4j library recently. However it's highly recommended for owners of RealADSB app on iOS devices like iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Other than bug fixes it also includes latest databases of airplanes and airports. • adsb_hub3 is updated to version 3.5.1 and contains refreshed database of aicrafts including latest Boeing 737 MAX deliveries. Database has been used for elasticsearch, geoevent, kml, lametric and smartwatch outputs. So if you're using those outputs you will benefit from this update the most.

• RealADSB app for Apple Watch is coming to Apple AppStore very soon! It requires adsb_hub3 version 3.5+ with new output type smartwatch
  In JSON configuration file it will look like:

  Same port number has to be used if you're setting up port forwarding on router to access it from anywhere in the world. After that start Apple Watch app first and then select feed and other parameters such as measurement units and airplanes' color in RealADSB app on paired iPhone. • In latest update of the adsb_hub3 there is a way to create JSON configuration file in interactive mode i.e. adding inputs/outputs in terminal session. In order to do that download adsb_hub3 and execute command: java -jar adsb_hub3.jar config You will see a main menu with 4 options: 1 - add input, 2 - add output, 3 - save JSON configuration, 0 - exit. Type digit on keyboard and hit Return/Enter button. Instructions will follow to create inputs/outputs implementing your specific use case. Default values are shown inside square brackets such as [0.35] You can just press Enter to use those or type better value. Following inputs: adsb_exchange, beast_tcp, feed_info, rtl_tcp, sbs_tcp, sbs3_tcp and outputs: bonjour, elasticsearch, gdl90, geoevent, kml, lametric, realtime, rest are supported. You can read more about configuration here. In the end don't forget to write result file using option 3 in main menu. Option 0 in main menu or Ctrl+C key sequence will close the app without saving file. Of course you can edit JSON configuration file with favorite text editor later on.
  If terminal application is supporting ANSI escape codes you can run the tool with command: java -jar adsb_hub3.jar colorconfig That will give a nice green color to the text entered by user.

• New version of adsb_hub3 has got an integration with LaMetric Time smart clock! New output type lametric can be used to report information about aircraft closest to location specified in configuration file. I'm glad to announce release of adsb_hub3 server application! You can download it here New version can use existing JSON configuration for original adsb_hub but there are two important changes:

• New Oracle Java licensing model makes usage of Oracle JVM in production environment rather expensive. Besides new versions of Java currently released every 6 months! Luckily OpenJDK and other alternative implementations of JVM are coming to the rescue! However for any Java application it means necessity of upgrade from venerable Java 8 to a more modern version. Currently Java 11 is getting Long-Term-Support (LTS) and that's why adsb_hub3 requires Java 11 JDK/JRE to run. There are different online repositories to get Java 11 these days. For example for Raspberry Pi I had good experience with Liberica JDK from Bell Soft.
• If you're serious about research of air traffic you definitely need reliable tools to save pretty big amount of data first and later on analyze/visualize it. After working few years with ElasticSearch I think it's a great tool for the job! ElastiSearch is capable of storing terrabytes of data and can be easily scaled from single server to a huge cluster with 1000 nodes. And then there is Kibana that lets you visualize ElasticSearch data in a million different ways. It's also helpful for specifying template with mapping for index that adsb_hub3 will populate. That index will have documents with following fields: flight (aka callsign), altitude, squawk, heading, 24-bit ICAO code, horizontal/vertical speed, timestamp, location. Just location and timestamp fields require simple mapping: { "properties": { "location": { "type": "geo_point" }, "timestamp": { "type": "date" } } } You can start by creating template for expected index name with Cerebro, curl command or similar tools:
  Also if aircraft found in database then additional fields populated: ICAO type, operator and registration. In order to push data to ElasticSearch new output type called elasticsearch has been added to adsb_hub3 Example of configuration you can find here Most parameters are obvious but one I would like to clarify. Index value in JSON is the prefix for name of ElasticSearch index. When index created year and month will be added i.e. today it's going to be kewr-2019.11 I'm sure adsb_hub3 integration with ElasticSearch will open whole new universe of opportunities for aviation enthusiasts and professionals.

• Yesterday RealADSB 1.68 for Apple TV with support of tvOS 13 has reached Apple AppStore. It includes big number of UI changes that hopefully will make app experience more enjoyable. For example touchpad on remote is now controlling on-screen cursor making selection of aircrafts much easier and more intuitive. There is support for dark mode, new menu that allows to hide list of aircrafts, information about vertical movements of selected aircraft, etc. And as usually we open for questions and suggestions. • In addition to unexpected announce of Raspberry Pi 4 computer an operating system for entire Pi line was updated as well. Now it's based on Debian Buster and as a side effect it's no longer possible to install oracle-java8-jdk package there. OpenJDK comes to the rescue and for Buster openjdk-11-jdk has to be used instead.

• Integration with ADS-B Exchange was broken for a couple weeks due to unexpected change of API used by adsb_hub. New version of API requires unique authentication key that should be requested directly on ADS-B Exchange web site. It will be used by new adsb_hub 2.9 that is available as JAR right now. Unfortunately with new rules in order to get the key you need to run ADS-B Exchange feeder. For more details please check here.

• Yesterday I was on Delta's Airbus A220 inaugural flight from New-York (LGA) to Boston (BOS). It was amazing experience and I have to say A220 (BCS1) is absolutely the best airplane in its class. Of course mostly because it has window in lavatory but there are more reasons to love it: wide seats with big screen, spacious cabin, silent engines. • Couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to visit Farnborough International Airshow 2018 and snap some pictures: link Public days are not that good comparing with trade show days but unfortunately couldn't stay there whole week. On a side note was impressed by quality of service on Virgin Atlantic flights between US and UK. Due to issues with Rolly-Royce engines Boeing 787 Dreamliner was replaced with 6 years old Airbus 330 but attentive cabin crew really made it one of the best trips I ever had.

• After pretty long leave of absence I'm getting back to flight simulation. Refreshing skills with FSX and PMDG777 right now. Tried X-Plane a little bit but without realistic 777 or 787 there has nothing to do with it. P3D is the future but pretty expensive one. Today I wrote couple simple apps for Windows that work with external controllers: yokes, joysticks, pedals etc. First app is showing information about pressed buttons or axis and second one using JSON configuration file to send key combinations directly to FSX. For example in PMDG777 in order to disconnect autopilot key combination SHIFT+CTRL+Z has to be used. Unfortunately it can't be mapped to buttons of external controller inside the FSX. There is 3rd party solution for this issue called FSUIPC but I don't want to buy license for 10+ years old simulator. • In latest version (1.36) of the RealADSB app for Apple TV and iPhone/iPad photo appears for selected aircrats. In my tests I found photos shown for roughly 90% of all airframes. App is using airport-data.com content so any upload of photos for missing aircrafts will be helpful and highly appreciated!

• iOS 11 is getting closer to release and version 1.33 of the RealADSB app compiled for it already available in Apple AppStore. It has bunch of improvements including option to select multiple aircrafts on map, push notifications for squawk 7500/7600/7700, measurements of barometric pressure, pressure altitude and many other things. Unfortunately with latest update of Twitter app sharing stopped working. It looks like a lot of different apps currently affected by this problem and some kind of update for Twitter app is expected in near future.

• I'm working on implementing push notifications in RealADSB iOS app to notify about aircrafts squawking 7500/7600/7700 and important part of it is a new adsb_hub 2.4 triggering such events and collecting necessary information. It can be downloaded as JAR and requires new output in JSON configuration: { "type":"apn", "name":"Push notifications for RealADSB iOS app", "user_key":"AAA-BBB-CCC-DDD-EEE" } user_key parameter is unique for each P2P feed and can be requested via email admin at realadsb dot com. • adsb_hub 2.3 is available for download as JAR or ZIP package. It includes few important fixes that improve stability of the application especially for MLAT. Also there is updated database of aircrafts used by kml output. And last but not least in this version of adsb_hub added integration with ADS-B Exchange, more information about it here.

• As RealADSB community grows it's becoming more and more important to protect feed owners from overload and improve scalability of adsb_hub. In order to do that adsb_hub 2.2 got caching for bonjour output. It's activated by cacheInterval parameter in JSON configuration file: { "type":"bonjour", "name":"adsb_hub Bonjour Service", "host":"", "port":4567, "cacheInterval":"3" } Such configuration means every 3 seconds adsb_hub will create snapshot in memory containing list of aircrafts instead of generating such list from raw data every time when mobile clients require update. It significantly reduces CPU load and just slightly increases memory consumption.
• Another new feature in adsb_hub is called Feed Information. Whenever you share feed it's now possible to attach additional information to it and make it accessible in RealADSB iOS app. There is new input type that can be added to configuration: { "type":"feed_info", "name":"Feed Information", "path":"/home/pi/realadsb/feedInfo.txt" } You're defining information to share by using new text file specified with path parameter. Example of such file is here Currently it supports 2 types of records: title and link. Title is just a string and link is string with url separated using ||| (3 pipes). First record is used as a header. In mobile app it looks like this:

• In version 1.21 of the RealADSB iOS app I'm planning to add new setting: transition altitude. Whenever aircraft is below transition altitude app will use pressure of the reference airport to calculate QNH altitude. Reference airport is either nearest one OR airport defined in settings by 'Distance from Airport' 4-characters ICAO code OR reference airport of P2P feed. In any case there will be a new button on the left of 'Share' button which will give access to METAR of the reference airport. Also altitude higher and at transition altitude will have FL prefix in list of aircrafts.

• During almost 5 weeks that passed since previous news update I heavily invested my time into development of new features for RealADSB iOS app and just couple hours ago submitted version 1.18 to Apple AppStore! Upgrade from version 1.15 to 1.18 gives support for metric measurement system, adds sharing capabilities, allows to define reference airport to measure distances from it instead of current location, introduces Connection Manager to use multiple instances of adsh_hub, extends database with new aircrafts and last but not least fixes some bugs. • After releasing RealADSB 1.15 app for iPhone/iPad and AppleTV next logical step for me is to upgrade adsb_hub server app. There were some long standing issues in adsb_hub that required attention but I never had a chance to fix those. Here is list of most significant ones:
  * Outdated database of aircrafts for integration with Google Earth
  * Verbose output but at the same time absence of timestamps in console
  * Server socket used for communication with RealADSB iOS app was never released
  I'm glad to announce that problems above and many others were addressed in new major release of the adsb_hub 2.0!

• After many days of hard work RealADSB app was migrated to the iOS 10 and got some additional improvements: expanded database of aircrafts, text filters for tail number, callsign and aircraft type, color coding and on/off switchers for different aircrafts: commercial, general aviation, military etc. Currently version 1.14 for iPhone and iPad is available. • Last few days I was working on hybrid scenarios when adsb_hub is used in combination with other ADS-B setups running on Raspberry Pi such as PiAware. In this case ADS-B decoder is already present in the system and adsb_hub just need to redirect existing feed to whatever output is necessary: bonjour for iOS app, rest, realtime for web site or kml for Google Earth. It can be done by adding new input into json configuration file: { "type":"beast_tcp", "name":"dump1090", "host":"127.0.0.1", "port":30005 }. With that adsb_hub will use ADS-B feed in beast format provided by dump1090 on port 30005. To make your setup event better latest adsb_hub 1.9 adopts MLAT but you need to expose it first. In order to do that run following commands: sudo piaware-config -mlatResultsFormat "beast,connect,localhost:30104 ext_basestation,listen,30106" and then sudo piaware-config -restart. If you're VRS user there is a good chance you've done that already. After that adsb_hub should be able to receive MLAT data using new type of input in configuration: { "type":"sbs3_tcp", "name":"mlat", "host":"127.0.0.1", "port":30106 }. Special thanks to -Rainer- for bringing MLAT subject to my attention.

• Another month, another update! Newest adsb_hub 1.8 brings something never seen before: custom server actions triggered by aircrafts detected in cylinderical volume of space (zone) defined by latitude, longitude, radius (in miles), min and max altitudes. Let's take a look on example: { "type":"geoevent", "name":"KEWR04 approach", "latitude":"40.58", "longitude":"-74.235", "radius":"0.5", "min_altitude":"1500", "max_altitude":"3000", "command":"/bin/sh -c echo '{timestamp},{latitude},{longitude},{altitude},{callsign},{speed},{vspeed},{squawk}' >/users/realadsb/{icao24}.txt" }. As usually it should be added to output section of the JSON configuration file and when running adsb_hub will create the file for each unique aircraft detected on approach to KEWR RWY04L/R between 1500 and 3000 feet. After file created (or updated) it's ready for any kind of post-processing using sophisticated algorithms not implemented in adsb_hub. Even better you can add multiple sections like that to observe as many zones of airspace as necessary.

• adsb_hub 1.7 is getting new capability: statistics reporting! In order to activate it just add -Dstatfile.name=stat.log to command line. It will tell adsb_hub to dump up to 100 different parameters to stat.log file every minute. Most of them are counters for different types (DF) of received data blocks (or messages). For instance DF17 is total number of detected 1090 extended squitters, FD17_Error is number of messages that have wrong CRC and can't be used for further processing, FD17_Fixed is number of messages that were fixed by randomly switching single bit and FD17_OK is number of messages that were OK without any correction. • Looks like October is a great month for RealADSB! I'm glad to announce adsb_hub 1.6 with absolutely new output type which allows to see airplanes in Google Earth application directly transmitted from adsh_hub to your laptop or desktop. In order to use it add following configuration into output section inside JSON file: { "type":"kml", "name":"Realtime KML service", "host":"", "interval":"10", "port":7711 } You can change the port or interval (in seconds) if necessary. After adsb_hub started with updated JSON open following URL in browser: http://ip_of_adsb_hub:7711/kml. That URL should initiate download of kml file which can be open in Google Earth and will automatically update information about airplanes every 10 seconds.

• Year 2015 brought us brand new Raspberry Pi 2 with powerful quad core CPU that has enough resources to run adsb_hub. On top of NooElec USB dongle and 1090MHz antenna typical Raspberry setup consists of: Raspberry Pi 2 B, Case, Power supply, USB Wi-Fi and MicroSD memory card. As operating system I recommend an official Raspbian Jessie. It already includes Java 8 runtime. That means you will only need to install rtl_tcp and adsb_hub 1.5 to get your radar up and running. • I've recently updated iOS app in Apple AppStore and adsb_hub.jar backend software. New versions include bug fixes and some subtle UI changes to improve user experience.

• Yesterday I've installed new ADS-B antenna created by DPD Productions and it's greately improved coverage and number of detected aircrafts. Speaking about numbers there was one aircraft detected at 161 miles away from my current location and number of flights recorded per day jumped from 600-700 to 1000-1200.

• There are about 10500 aircrafts in database. Including beautiful Virgin 787-9! More news are reported on facebook page here

• One week ago we got a great feed from UK so our database is growing faster now. Altogether more than 7000 aircrafts have been detected and identified. All of them will go to the next version of iOS app.

• In order to improve stability of the ADS-B solution two more features added to adsb_hub:
  * If no data coming from the source for 60 seconds adsb_hub will try to reconnect every 60 seconds until successful connection established
  * All data about aircraft will be removed from memory if no messages received from aircraft for the last 60 minutes

• In adsb_hub added support for different modes of realtime output: airborn airplanes with location (0), airborne airplanes without location(1), airplanes on the ground (2) and all detected airplanes (3). • 2,500 airplanes manually checked on correct mapping between ICAO 24-bit identifier and tail number, type and operator
• When you click on callsign like BAW22B to find flight in Google a last letter will be removed because it's not part of the flight number and only used by certain airlines for internal purposes

• There are new pieces of information available on Data page: tail number, aircraft type and operator. For some airplanes information might be missing but I will fill the gaps before 2014.

• This morning I've created Facebook and Twitter accounts for RealADSB project. Web site is also got some structural updates. And finally ordered new laptop. It's "Black Friday" after all ;-)
